CARE CENTER: ONE-STOP ADOLESCENT AND YOUTH FRIENDLY REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CENTER, ADO-EKITI, NIGERIA.

It is an ongoing ADOLFRIC’s project which is essentially a dedicated one-stop Adolescent and Youth Friendly Center having a decent sexual and reproductive health clinic with complementary social, educational and recreational arms; specially designed to meet the holistic needs of adolescents and young adults (10-24years).

Main justification for the Center

• Ekiti State is a youth-dominated State in which, as shown by findings, most adolescents, especially those in schools, have myriads of social and reproductive health-related issues that are not appropriately and satisfactorily handled in the adult-dominated socio-medical facilities around majorly because of challenges of healthcare charges, stigmatization and confidentiality.

• Ekiti State with a teaming population of adolescents and young people does not have any dedicated and designated center for adolescent and youth friendly services especially those concerned with family planning and other reproductive health services which constitute the bulk of the unmet needs of the young population.

OVERVIEW OF THE ONE-STOP ADOLESCENT AND YOUTH FRIENDLY CENTER

The architectural and functional designations of the center are subdivided into 4 units as outlined below:

1. Adolescent Friendly Clinic (the Heart of the center)

• Adolescent Gynaecology clinic
• Adolescent Andrology Clinic
• Adolescent antiretroviral therapy clinic
• Adolescent Gender-based violence clinic
• Adolescent Antenatal Clinic (primarily for pregnant teens)
• Adolescent Family Planning/Emergency Contraception Clinic
• Procedure room/Mini Operating Theatre: for day case procedures like evacuation of retained products of conception, insertion of implants, excision of breast lumps, etc.
• Observation Bay
• Adolescent Temporary Habitation Apartment (ATHA): an adult-supervised 14-bedded room for a short admission for psychotherapy and other forms of immediate stabilization for adolescent victims of teenage pregnancy facing domestic violence, gender-based violence, newly diagnosed HIV infection, etc.
• Diagnostic/Ultrasound Unit; for reproductive health-related issues (including screening for COVID-19)
• Telemedicine Unit


2. Adolescent Friendly Recreation Centre
• Gymnastic Spot
• Indoor/Outdoor Games Unit
• Newspaper Bay
• ICT Unit: for training
• Youths Conference Room (for training , motivational and recreational activities )


3. Adolescent Friendly Research Center
• Run by the Research Hub of ADOLFRIC
• Primarily saddled with research activities within and outside ADOLFRIC; especially collaborative research involving other NGOs, research institutes, academic and related bodies.
• Training of students and young researchers in sexual and reproductive health-related research
• Assisting in choosing reproductive health-related research topics, data collection, collation, analysis and publication
• Library Unit with ICT facilities- well equipped; and that can conveniently accommodate 20 youths (complementing the services of the existing public library in the State)
• Stationery Center: with facilities for photocopying, printing work, book binding, scanning, etc.
• Establishment of Journal Club with a peak plan of having Peer Reviewed Adolescent Friendly Reproductive Health Journal (ADOLFRIC Reproductive Health Journal)
• Research Institute- a peak plan (ADOLFRIC Research Institute)


4. Adolescent Friendly Research Center
• ADOLFRIC Offices
• Conference room
• ADOLFRIC Guest Rooms-2 well equipped rooms for visiting distant facilitators not residing in Ekiti State.
