Adesegun Olayiwola FATUSI, the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Science, Ondo, is a frontline public health expert, with focus on Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal and Adolescent Health (including HIV and AIDS); Public Health Leadership and Policy Development; and Strategic Planning and Programme Management. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (in Community Health), a Professor of Community Medicine & Public Health at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria (OAU) as well as an Honorary Consultant to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He is also the founder of Campus Health and Rights Initiative (CHRI); President/CEO of Academy for Health Development (AHEAD), Ile-Ife; and, President/CEO of the Paaneah Foundation, Ota. He has severally served as temporary Adviser to WHO Headquarters in Geneva on Adolescent and Reproductive Health. In addition, he is the Chair of Nigeria’s National Adolescent Health & Development Technical Working Group, the Vice President (Sub-Saharan Africa) for the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH), and a member Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. He is currently also the National President of the Alumni Association of the College of Health Sciences, OAU. Furthermore, he currently serves on the Board of Trustees/Management of several non-governmental organisations focusing on adolescent and young people’s health and sexual, reproductive and maternal health. He has previously worked with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s programme in Nigeria as a Reproductive Health Adviser, and consults for several government agencies as well as international development agencies, including WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank, USAID-funded programmes, and DfID-funded projects. Within the University system, he served, among others, as Director of Population and Reproductive Health Programme, Director of the Institute of Public Health, and the Provost of the College of Health Sciences. Fatusi graduated from OAU in 1987 with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree, and with distinction in Community Health and won the Lawrence Omole Award for the best graduating student in Community Health. In 1992, he won the Federal Government one-year abroad award for the best candidate in the Part I examinations of the Faculty of Public Health of the National Postgraduate Medical College. He graduated from the International Masters of Public Health programme of the Hebrew University, Hadassah, Israel, in 1995 with summa cum laude honors. He was a Gates-Packard Scholar, Population Leadership Programme of the University of Washington, Seattle, USA between 2001 and 2002, and a Visiting Scholar at the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA in 2007. He is a seasoned researcher, with over 130 peer-reviewed and technical publications. He brings his strong academic background to bear positively on field-based public health practice, and he has continued to play frontline roles in leading national public health research initiatives, policy development, and population-level programming in Nigeria and beyond. Among others, he served as the lead consultant for the development of the following policy document: the National Policy on the Health & Development of Adolescent and Young Persons in Nigeria; National Strategic Plan on the Health & Development of Adolescent and Young Persons in Nigeria; the National Action Plan for Advancing the Health of Adolescents in Nigeria; National Policy on HIV/AIDS (2010-2015); National Strategic Framework on HIV/AIDS (2010-2015); National Policy on HIV/AIDS Research Agenda (2010); the Revised National Reproductive Health Policy (2010-2015); the National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework (2017-2021); the National Youth Policy (2016), the Integrated National Reproductive, Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) + Nutrition Strategy (2017-2021); the National RMNCAH Quality of Care Strategy (2017-2021), and the national Youth Policy (2018-2022). He has also led the implementation of several national research initiatives including the National Study on School Health, the National HIV/AIDS Knowledge, Attitude and Practices and School Health Survey, and the National TB Quality of care study. He was a member of the Ministerial Committee on Nigeria’s Health Sector Reform Programme in 2004 and the Technical working Group for Nigeria’s new National Health Policy in 2016. He is the Director of the annual Short Course on Adolescent Health in sub-Saharan Course, and a facilitator at the annual Short Course on Adolescent Health in Low and Middle-Income Countries hosted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and WHO HQ. He has served as Temporary Adviser to WHO on several occasions.
